October 1, 2009 Pam Bennett Gains Momentum In RaceLGBT Community and Labor Back Bennett Aurora, CO – Pam Bennett, candidate for Aurora City Council At-Large, is a frontrunner to become a fresh face on the Aurora City Council this November. The Committee for Pam Bennett for City Council proudly announces a special event for Pam Bennett. After recently being endorsed by the Denver Area Labor Federation and SEIU Local #105, the gay and lesbian community is also rallying around Bennett Thursday, October 1st. Bennett will kickoff LGBT History Month with a special event for the gay and lesbian community. Keynote speaker for the event will be Former Speaker of the House and United States Senate Candidate, Andrew Romanoff. Pam Bennett stated, "If I may slightly alter the words of Harvey Milk to make it more relevant to today’s struggle within our community, it's not my victory; it's yours and yours and yours. If a transgender person can win, it means there is hope that the system can work for all minorities. If we fight, we've given them hope". The event is expected to rally gay and lesbian people from across the Aurora and Denver region in support of electing Colorado’s first open transgender candidate. Bennett went on to say, "Here in Colorado we have overcome our own battles.” She said. “By passing hate crimes legislation, by making sure no one can discriminate against an individual in the workplace or in public housing because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, we’ve also ensured rights for gay and lesbian parents, and designated beneficiary rights for same-sex couples within our community… but we still have work to do." Ms. Bennett concluded. With an activated base of grassroots supporters, Bennett has already knocked on thousands of doors, made hundreds of phone calls and encouraged supporters to reach out to neighbors, family and friends in order to bring about an open and transparent government in the city of Aurora. The event, in support of Pam Bennett, a former member of the board of Equal Rights Colorado, will be held at 3240 York Street, Denver, CO 80205, from 5:30-7:30P.M. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and working as a technician and engineer in the aerospace, electronics and oil and gas industries, and now as a Paralegal, Bennett enjoys serving her community. Currently an Aurora Commissioner where she serves on the City’s Veterans Affairs and formerly on the Cultural Affairs Commissions, Bennett has been a strong citizens advocate and served as a Legislative Volunteer for State Representative (now Senator) Morgan Carroll and is an advocate for a numerous of non-profits in the community that fight for economic and social justice. |

Voice 303-886-8877 Aurora, CO: The Pam Bennett for City Council Committee is pleased to announce that Pam Bennett had filed to become a candidate for Aurora City Council At-Large. In announcing her candidacy, Bennett talked to her supporters about the need for a leader ready to work hard to bring good paying, quality jobs to Aurora during these difficult economic times.
“I am running for office because I want to give the citizens and business owners of Aurora a voice at the City Council,” Bennett noted. “Aurora is at the start of her second century as a city of wonderful diversity, urban and rural, military and civilian, and of varied experiences.” She stated, “We also need leadership on city council working hard to bring more jobs to Aurora. I look forward to being that leader.” Noting the major changes being demanded by citizens and businesses, Bennett remarked, “As the healthcare programs in Colorado and our nation change we must be ahead of that change.” Bennett added that “Aurora has the source of our economic security here now and for the future,” she continued, “The former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center now the home to the Aurora campus of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Children’s Hospital and very soon the Veterans Administration Hospital have changed our city to become a healthcare city.” Bennett pointed out that Aurora has numerous parks, bike trails and amateur sports parks, “Although we are known for our medical facilities and research, we are also widely known for our citizens health and fitness.” Bennett continued, “Aurora is now ready to be the city where men, women and families will come to enjoy our fitness opportunities and for their complete healthcare.” “My website, Pam Bennett for Aurora dot Com, will have up to date information concerning issues and my blog,” Ms. Bennett said. “I believe it is important for Aurora citizens to have candidates and leaders with modern computer skills,” Bennett continued, “We are in a technologically competitive world and having city leaders with these skills will help bring more jobs to Aurora.”
Ms. Bennett ran an impressive race for Aurora City Council in 2007 demonstrating great campaign skills , and she earned enough votes to place a tight third against two incumbents even though it was her first campaign for elected office. Her campaign drew national attention for hard work and breaking many barriers newcomers running for office encounter. “My staff and volunteers deserve a lot of credit for doing so great in what was considered the most difficult race in Colorado,” Bennett stated, “This year we will work harder and do more to make this win happen.” A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Pam Bennett earned a B.S. in Resource Development from Michigan State University and worked for 20 years as a technician and engineer in the aerospace, electronics and oil and gas industries. Following her retirement from her technical career, Bennett has focused on serving her community and being actively involved in the legislative and political process in Colorado. She is proud of her volunteer work with the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter. Bennett earned her Paralegal Certificate at the Community College of Aurora, an American Bar Association approved paralegal certificate program. # # # |
